Some weddings are about a big room and a long guest list. This isn’t one of them.
Severndroog Castle is made for small weddings: up to 22 of your favourite people, a ceremony in a room full of light, and a glass of fizz on a rooftop that looks out over the whole city. No crowds, no conveyor belt, no other couples waiting in the wings. For a few hours, the castle is yours.
We’re in Castle Wood, part of the ancient Oxleas Woodlands. It feels miles from anywhere, yet it’s only a short hop from Greenwich.
Lady James built the castle in memory of her husband, Commodore Sir William James. It celebrates his capture of the island fortress of Suvarnadurg, on India’s west coast, in 1755, and has stood on Shooters Hill ever since as a 19-metre tribute to a marriage.
After decades of neglect, local people fought to save it, and it reopened in 2014. Every wedding here helps keep it open for the next 240 years.
Both packages include room and furniture hire, supervised rooftop access, a pre-wedding visit for your photographer (subject to availability) and a dedicated wedding coordinator on the day.
For the smallest weddings, there’s nowhere quite like our roof. Just you, up to four guests and your registrar, 19 metres up with the skyline on one side and the treetops on the other.
It’s perfect if you’re planning an elopement, or if you were heading for a register office and want something more memorable for the same small group.
Outside, Severndroog is pure Georgian Gothic: battlements, hexagonal turrets and pointed windows rising out of the trees. Inside, the rooms are elegant and full of light, with tall windows and original plasterwork.
You get dramatic photos in the woods and a beautiful room for your ceremony.
Everything couples usually ask us before they book.
Up to 22 guests plus the two of you for the Classic package, or up to 4 guests for a rooftop ceremony. That makes Severndroog one of London’s most intimate wedding venues, ideal for weddings of 10 or 20 guests.
Our Classic ceremony and drinks reception is £3,000, and the Rooftop ceremony is £1,800. Both include room hire, a wedding coordinator and supervised access to the roof.

Weekdays and Saturdays. The castle is open to the public on Sundays, so we don’t hold weddings then.
Yes. We allow one photographer and one videographer per wedding, and your photographer can visit beforehand (subject to availability).
