ABOUT

A HIDDEN TREASURE WITH A STORY TO TELL

From ancient watchtower to beloved local landmark, discover the rich past and vibrant present of Severndroog Castle.

A Landmark With Legacy

Severndroog Castle is an 18th-century Gothic tower nestled in the ancient woodland of Shooter’s Hill, southeast London. With its striking architecture, rich history and far-reaching rooftop views, it remains a much-loved local landmark and a rare Georgian folly open to the public.

The Castle was Built as a memorial to Commodore Sir William James in 1784 by his wife Lady Anne James following the death of her husband in 1783. It commemorates his naval victory over the Indian fortress of Suvarnadurg – the anglicised name of which gives the Castle its name.

Its distinctive triangular structure, complete with three turrets, stands 132 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views across London and beyond. Today, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

Over the centuries, Severndroog has been many things – a strategic memorial, a place of learning, a public lookout, and even a tearoom. But by the late 20th century, it had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public in 1988.

Following a passionate community-led campaign, Severndroog was saved and restored by the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust. Reopened in 2014, it is now once again a place for the community to enjoy – and a beacon on the hill once more.
