Exploring the Severndroog Tea Room Café’s Sustainability Journey

At the Severndroog Tea Room, we are on journey to reducing waste and plastics and to using local suppliers. This has been inspired by our membership of the “Good Food in Greenwich” charter.

We are very lucky to offer amazing fresh salad from Sitopia organic farm, just down the other side of Shooters Hill. And we have started growing our own herbs in the pots around the Castle, you may have spotted them.

Something we are very proud of is that we are a breastfeeding-friendly café and recently introduced highchairs for our small customers.

We want to invite our customers to join us in sustainable practices, such as composting, recycling and reducing plastic: So, instead of a single-use coffee cup or cake box, why not bring your own reusable cup or container when you come to the Tea Room? In return, we will give you 25p off your bill. And bring a water bottle for a free tap water fill-up, rather than buying a bottle of water.

Did you know we can offer coffee grounds to our customers? Just bring in a box and ask Tea Room staff. Coffee waste is eco-friendly as it is non-toxic and could be used for:

Arts and Crafts: Used coffee grounds are a natural dye so arts and crafts projects benefit from using them as a stain. A few leftover grounds, flour, salt, and parchment paper may also be used to make homemade fossils. A simple combination produces mouldable dough that may be shaped and stamped.

Pet Care After bathing your dog, use a handful of used coffee grounds to scrub down and then rinse. The grounds stimulate the skin and keep fleas away from animals.

Skin Care Coffee grounds can be used as natural, anti-inflammatory exfoliators. They assist in the creation of a biodegradable scrub that is free of the toxic plastic found in most store-bought products. To prepare a simple coffee scrub at home, combine equal parts used, dry coffee grounds and coconut oil in a paste.

Hair Care Used coffee grounds can be used as a hair reviver, after damage that chemicals in hair products may cause to hair. To revitalize dull hair, combine coffee grounds, honey and olive oil.

In the Kitchen Odours are naturally eliminated by coffee grounds, place a small bowl of the grounds in the back of your fridge to remove odours. Grounds may also be used to remove odours from the skin: after cutting garlic, use a tablespoon of ground coffee on your hands and rinse to remove any odour. You may also use coffee grounds to remove food stains from your cookware and to boost the “scratchiness” of abrasive kitchen cleansers.
